  Where improvisation meets structure and score

  Interest call for experienced singers, vocal improvisers & choir leaders

  What happens when spontaneous music-making meets structure and notation? How can we bring improvisation into a structured ensemble setting – and use it to create our own music?

  In this special workshop weekend, Julia Zipprick and Merel Martens bring together experienced vocal improvisers, singers and choir leaders to explore different ways of creating and shaping music together in the moment.

  Drawing on methods from Vocal River, Vocal Painting and Solfège: Music in the Moment, we’ll experiment with different approaches to collective music-making – from spontaneous ideas and intuitive musical responses to guided structures and written scores. We’ll explore how these elements can interact, and how improvisational approaches can become part of a structured musical setting, such as a choir.

  The focus is on creating our own music: developing musical ideas together, shaping them, responding to each other and discovering how structure and notation can support – rather than limit – spontaneity.

  We’re looking for 15- 20 participants who already have experience with singing, vocal improvisation and/or leading voices, and who are excited to explore the space between freedom and form, improvisation and composition, spontaneity and structure.
